Today RLabs with their Social Media Factory team was out at College of Cape Town. The purpose of the visit was to do a Social Media Surgery at their Career Expo 2011. A Social Media Surgery is where we take our team to the public and introduce people to Social Media and people can come and ask our surgeons question regarding Social Media.

It was a career expo so in this case student could come and asked us questions on how they can use Social Networks with their studies. The big question that was asked “how can we use Social Media in a business” or can we start a business with all these tools. The team also did some live streaming and live updates about the career expo and it only took us 15 minutes to get College of Cape Town trending on twitter

You can click here to view more pictures of the event

We were tested this week on our knowledge of what we have learnt over the past few months about Entrepreneurship with Ahmed Kajee. For the first time the atmosphere in class seemed to be very tense and as students we are so use to a relaxed and fun time in class.

All the participants were studying hard this week to make a good impression on Ahmed and they felt fairly relieved when the tests was over. Ahmed however, made it easy for us by allowing us to use notes that he gave just took away all the strain of remembering everything he taught for the past four months. When the test was over and done with, everyone seemed very positive about the outcome and can’t wait for the results. Not me though, you know the feeling after writing a test and you just know that you struggled and you just not sure, thats how I felt but I am optmistic

In two weeks time we will be writing tests on HR and Marketing and I’m looking forward to preparing for that because I really want to do well. I will keep you guys posted on the results of the tests. We were also introduced to Rodney Douglas an entrepreneur and owner of Kaapie Clothing, that is going to spend some time with us at Rlabs this coming week, looking forward to hear his stories. I end off with a quote from Rodney,”poor people are not poor because they dont have money but because they dont know how to work with money

As usual we had a full class of excited people ready to learn from a successful entrepreneur like Ahmed, and his stories really inspires us.

“On the plains of hesitation lies the blackened bones of countless millions who at the dawn of victory lied down to rest, and in resting, died”, a quote Ahmed shared, challenging us to think differently and helping us to do more and to deliver better services to clients but for me personally to also pursue relentlessly our dreams and to not give up. After listening this quote I felt like I could really pursue my dreams.

We are coming to a close with our first Entrepreneurship program for the year and were just informed, that we are being tested later in June to see what we understand about the topic, so we will be hitting the Entrepreneurship books soon.

The request for today was “Art of Mobile Counselling“. The facilitator for the session was Craig Ross he started of by saying that we wont be doing Art of Mobile Counselling because being the world first mobile counselors we should know everything that a mobile counselor should have in his or her toolbox. Instead we will have another brainstorming session which we will compile as a Art of Mobile Counselling booklet and e-book.

The session of today was more about understanding the functionalities and icons of the JamiiX system. We also covered the role that the Pro/Admin person should have while managing the Drug Advice and Support (DAS) exchange.

RLabs is a partner of the VSA. I work for the VSA and also happen to be the chairperson of the Grahamstown branch of RLabs called RLabs Rhini. RLabs is a living lab that works to rehabilitate ex-gangsters and ex-drug dealers. Here in
Grahamstown we are going to focus on peer pressure because many matriculants end up drinking themselves into a stupor at taverns just because they want to fit.

I had the privilage of representing this branch at a conference run by Living Labs in Southern Africa at the RLabs headquartes in Athlone, Cape Town on 1st & 2nd March 2011. It was a success considering that all present Living Labs shared their information freely in order to grow together.

Present at the conference were: Siyakhula Living Lab from Rhodes University; RLabs, the hosts; RLabs Rhini; North West Living Lab; ENoLL who was representing Open Living Labs and Living Labs Global and LAUREA a member of the Europian Network of Living Labs.

The first day the different Labs shared how they were established and the kind of challenges they are facing as a Lab. On the second day RLab facilitators shared Social Media information and the importance of the way forward as the LLiSA Network to get maximum publicity using the Social Media Tools.

I spent Thursday and Friday with the RLabs’ team. From that information we are starting our work in a week’s time. RLabs Rhini’s first generation of trainees will work over a period of 28 days which will be broken into fourteen weeks. That is, four months. We will introduce them on the uses of communication websites and I hope my hometown will gain from my trip to Cape Town.

Ahmed was his usual self, very positive and confident, excited, personally I don’t think he knows how to be anything else.

The topic of the morning was Sales and one of the fundamental things emphasized by Ahmed is the importance of delivering on your promises and believing in your product. So whether you delivering a service or selling a product, you have to deliver as promised. Everyone is immediately taken by the wisdom that flows from the 34 year old successful business man and even when he was challenged in a debate about sales, the man won hands down, there is clearly no substitute for experience. Everyone participated in the discussions and feels that they gain so much more knowledge in the discussions.

So what have I taken from the session? Entrepreneurship is fun and exciting and at the same time lots of hard work, but we are all learning and receiving guidance from a successful Entrepreneur, thanx Ahmed Kajee for sacrificing your time.

For some it was their first time on a computer and we were pushing some boundaries and others just wanted to know more about what we have to offer, it was a great start.

The class had to be split into two because of the amount of participants, so myself, Rene and Gary Saaiman doing one class and Brent, Angelo and Tamzin Martin doing the other class. Tamzin and Gary being last years graduates and champions from our communities. Both started classes started a welcome and a check in, where everyone had to share a bit about themselves and their expectations of the course. Than a short presentation on what Social Media really is and than we an even shorter presentation on Gmail, where after they had to create their own email accounts, which was really fun for all.

The evening ended pretty much the same way it started, with so much enthusiasm and excitement going round and it was very pleasing to see the participants not wanting to leave when the class came to an end, makes us at Rlabs look forward to the next one.

The guy is oozing with confidence and knows exactly what he is talking about and he is quick to rectify you when you speak out of line, ‘that is in business, I mean’.

Some of the feedback that I received from those attending the class was, “Ahmed makes you feel comfortable but also challenges your mindset, he creates a very positive atmosphere and you never feel left out of the class” and others were saying, “he so passionate about Entrepreneurship and he makes one feel the same way and that the work is very informative”.

He brings to the table his own experience in business which makes the program so much more exciting that those attending cant wait for the next class. He has about five successful businesses and is always looking for the next deal. Some of the quotes I took form the last class is ” always stay true to yourself, never rip people off and know your worth.
